The beginning of a new calendar year is an ideal time to reflect on the future, both professionally and personally. We take stock of the past 12 months: our achievements, our challenges, and how we want to develop over the next year.

New Year’s resolutions are a natural way to reflect on our goals, our aspirations and the habits and behaviours that will help us achieve them. The simple act of setting resolutions helps us to focus our attention on specific objectives and creates a sense of purpose.

In the MeetDistrict Marketplace, New Year’s resolutions are a hot topic in conversations between our Members every January. And supportive as we are, we actively applaud some common resolutions many of them express.

Career development

As Members set specific goals for the year, they identify the skills needed to reach them. MeetDistrict routinely provides training and informative sessions for its Members to help them develop the skills most relevant for this year. This can be a technical skill, or a soft skill like negotiation, public speaking, or using a new key technology.

Building professional relationships and networking.

MeetDistrict has a vibrant Community of ambitious professionals with various backgrounds in different industries. Bringing people together at the MeetDistrict Marketplace creates opportunities to connect with colleagues, managers, sparring partners, mentors, prospects, and potential partners.

Health and wellbeing

Individuals often make a commitment to prioritise self-care in the next year. MeetDistrict promotes a healthy work-life balance with its multiple locations close to main cities and good accessibility. Our technology for optimum temperature, air quality, and lighting conditions creates the ideal environment to keep people energised and happy. There are quiet areas for Members to retreat for focused work, mindful contemplation, and stress reduction.

By February, however, many of our resolutions had fallen by the wayside, in spite of our best intentions and dedication in January. Here are five tips to help your resolutions stick:

1. Be specific and realistic

Goals and resolutions work best when they are specific and achievable. Whether it's advancing in your career, acquiring new skills, or achieving a specific milestone, your goals should be as specific as possible, and realistic and achievable enough to prevent frustration and keep you motivated.

2. Break down goals into actionable steps

Once you are clear on your work-related resolutions, it is a good idea to break them down into small, actionable steps. This lets you track your progress and makes the entire process more manageable.

3. Prioritise and focus

Focusing on just a handful of key goals increases your chances of success and prevents spreading yourself too thin. Focusing on the most critical areas for improvement and growth in your professional life makes it easier to prioritise your resolutions based on their impact and relevance to your career.

4. Establish a timeline

A goal without a deadline is just a dream. It’s essential to assign a realistic timeline to each step towards achieving your goals. Having a timeline creates a sense of urgency, helps you stay on track, and lets you make adjustments when needed.

5. Seek accountability and support

Having someone to hold you accountable can actually increase your commitment. Sharing work-related resolutions with professional peers can be a powerful motivator. Not only will they likely give you positive feedback and encouragement, they may actually offer support as well and provide opportunities for collaboration and networking.

Keep these tips in mind as you work towards your goals. Celebrate your achievements along the way, and don’t be too hard on yourself if you encounter setbacks. Flexibility is key when pursuing New Year's resolutions. Be open to adapting your goals based on changing circumstances or new opportunities. Remember the journey is just as important as the destination, so remain focused on the end results, and by next December you will have a beautiful track record of accomplished successes.
